Mind Control Cults
I was once in the cult of scientology. I had no idea what a cult was. I am glad I am out but when I was in, I was very dedicated. Someone has made a video of all the traits one will find in a cult so that others may prevent becoming victims.
This YouTube video demonstrates how people are brought into cults and how they are treated when they try to leave. It's stated as being a video about 'how to start a cult' but the truth is that this is a video that should be viewed by everyone, expecially current and former cult members. It's good to see how people are duped.

To combat Vince’s many effective shows on the abuses at Narconon’s Stone Hawk rehab facility, Stone Hawk has purchased an hour of radio time each Saturday morning for a month to spread their PR nonsense. Wickstrom hops on a plane to come do their little show each week but can’t stick around an extra few hours to answer questions.
Anyway, Kimberly Darr returns to the show. She has been relentless in exposing the fraud and abuse rampant in the Stone Hawk facility in Battle Creek, Michigan. She’s been working hard to see that other patients and their families aren’t harmed by Scientology’s drug-rehab front group.
More and more people keep leaving Stone Hawk due to Vince Daniels’ shows. The latest to exit is Sue Wilkins’ son. Sue actually brought the sheriff with her to get her son out of Stonehawk this week. She talks about googling “Drug Rehab” and getting tons of sites all pointing to Narconon. That’s just one of the ways Scientology uses the net to lure people into their program. They created hundreds of sites pointing to their program. This not only buries the competition but actually increases the ranking of their main Narconon site in many search engines. ...{..}

'Tom Cruise' Missile Jokester Arrested

"A Silicon Valley figure who fled the country after being convicted in part because of a Usenet joke about Tom Cruise and Scientology has been arrested in Arizona.
Keith Henson, an engineer, writer and futurist, was arrested Friday in Prescott, Ariz., where he has been living for the past few years, and now faces extradition to California. Henson originally fled to Canada after the 2001 conviction.

The misdemeanor conviction in California stems from a post that Henson made in the alt.religion.scientology Usenet newsgroup that joked about aiming a nuclear "Tom Cruise" missile at Scientologists, and Henson's picketing of the group's Golden Era Productions in Riverside, Calif.
Michael Kielsky, Henson's defense attorney, said Monday that his client will likely be released on Monday evening and is required to appear in court for a March 5 hearing.
Kielsky said that Henson was mistreated by police and jailers--including being told during the arrest that he had no right to an attorney and being held in solitary confinement in a poorly heated cell without adequate bedding. "My best information is that it's very political," he said. "They gave him an extra blanket but then an hour later they took it away--(this is) a 66-year-old man with a heart problem."
A message left with Sheila Polk, the Yavapai County Attorney, was not returned on Monday.
A brief flap that ensued over the amount of Henson's bond delayed the process. A judge initially set the amount at $7,500, but then increased it to $500,000 at the request of prosecutors, according to the Yavapai County Detention Center. After a telephone conference with the judge and attorneys on Monday afternoon, the bond was lowered to $5,000.
Henson's frequent encounters with Scientology, coupled with his lengthy resume of programming, electrical engineering and futurist accomplishments, have made him something of a legal cause celebre in technology circles.
Supporters have created a "Free Keith Henson" blog, posted a note from his wife, Arel Lucas, and are asking for donations to a legal defense fund. The fund was set up by members of the Extropy Institute, a nonprofit group that has been a gathering point for futurists and technologists since 1991.
Convicted of making threat to interfere with religion Henson was convicted in 2001 under a California law (Sec. 422.6) that criminalizes any threat to interfere with someone else's "free exercise" of religion. One Usenet post that was introduced at his trial included jokes about sending a "Tom Cruise" missile against a Scientology compound (the actor is a prominent Scientologist). Picketing Scientology buildings and other "odd behavior" were also part of the charges, Deputy District Attorney Robert Schwarz said at the time.
Jeanne Roy, a deputy district attorney in Riverside County, Calif., said that the next step for her office is to see whether Henson shows up for his March 5 court date. If he does not, an Arizona warrant would be issued for his arrest. If he does, Roy said, another court date would be set to deal with extradition through a process known as a governor's warrant.
"That won't happen by March 5," Roy said. "It's usually a 30- to 90-day process, depending on the state, for that paperwork." If extradited to California, she said, Henson faces a year in jail or six months in jail and 3 years of probation.
When asked whether it's common for California to try to extradite someone on a misdemeanor conviction, Roy said: "It's not common, but it's not unusual either. We do it in some cases."
Henson's family is concerned about what might happen to him in jail. "The Scientologists have made death threats to my father," his daughter Amber Henson said in an e-mail message to CNET News.com. "My mom and I are going to do everything possible to make sure that they are not able to silently do away with him." (The Church of Scientology could not immediately be reached for comment on Monday.)
Before his misdemeanor conviction, Henson had become embroiled in a civil lawsuit that Scientology filed against him.
It arose out of supposedly secret scriptures written by L. Ron Hubbard, the late science fiction author and founder of Scientology, which describe a galactic overlord named Xenu who is allegedly the source of all human evil. Since the early 1990s, Scientology has made a concerted effort to remove those documents from the Internet--including suing Henson--but they finally found a permanent legal home in the Netherlands.
Scientology's tactics, which critics say include cult-like retention practices and intimidation, have drawn fire in the past. A Time magazine cover story, for instance, concluded that "Scientology poses as a religion but really is a ruthless global scam." Xenu and Cruise were also satirized in a November 2005 episode of South Park."

An outspoken anti-Scientology activist, Hensen is an electrical engineer, "and writer on life extension, cryonics, memetics and Evolutionary psychology," says the Wikipedia.
He was arrested Saturday night on a bench warrant and at a hearing today (February 5), Henson's lawyers said they're fighting for his release.
Hensen fled to Canada after death threats and his wife says she's still afraid he'll be murdered.
Why has he been targeted by the cult, founded by sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard in 1952 and which today boasts actor Tom Cruise among its members?
Seven years ago Hensen was innocuously watching another critic mock Scientologists on a Net newsgroup," says 10 Zen Monkeys, going on:
In a gonzo discussion about procuring a 'Tom Cruise missile,' they’d joked about working with 'Secret Agent 99, wearing a stunning black leather biker outfit.' Other posters joined in the internet discussion, asking whether Tom Cruise missiles are affected by wind.”No way,” Keith joked. “Modern weapons are accurate to a matter of a few tens of yards.
The police were informed of his 'threatening' posts, and Henson was arrested.
The police tipsters were the Scientologists themselves, who had already been the targets of an annoying picketing campaign by Henson over the death of a woman near their complex. Besides Henson’s inability to acquire long-range missiles, his wife notes bitterly that it would be impossible for any church members in the complex to feel threatened by the internet posts, since they aren't even allowed to access the internet. Scientology officials have also claimed Henson followed their employees home _ though Henson counters that 'the same people who claimed to have been 'terrorized' by the picketers offered to take them to lunch on June 25, 2000, evidently to distract them from the death scene being cleaned up.'
Though Henson was found innocent of long-range missile terrorism, for his activities he was convicted of interfering with a church - a California hate crime for which he received a six-month misdemeanor prison sentence. But Henson said he feared his life would be in danger from Scientologists if he were imprisoned - and he fled to Canada in 2001.
He was already bankrupt from an earlier ruling that he’d infringed on Scientology copyrights. But Henson continued picketing Scientologists in Toronto, and they apparently retaliated by informing Canadian police of his presence. (Henson believes the Scientologists told police he was a terrorist and bomb maker.) L.A. Weekly reported two unmarked vans pulled up and 'a handful of emergency-services task-force officers - Canada’s version of a police SWAT team - spilled out, wearing body armor and carrying submachine guns.' Describing the event, the EFF reported Henson was 'arrested in a shopping mall parking lot, by a heavily armed paramilitary unit.'
EFF Executive Director Shari Steele argued that Free speech was at stake in his case: 'This trial seems intended to punish Mr. Henson for his opposition to a powerful organization using the barest thread of legal justification to do so.'
His wife added in an interview with a Canadian newsweekly that “It’s horrifying to me and to his friends how they’ve managed to twist his words.”
Henson was ultimately released from a Canadian jail after filing an application for political asylum — reportedly the first ever accepted for review by the Canadian government, and for the next three years he lived as an expatriate in Canada, awaiting their decision.
"Besides being a digital encryption and free speech advocate, he's one of the original Burr-Brown/Texas Instruments researchers and a co-founder of the Space Colony movement," says a slashdot post.

A recent news article suggested that Scientology views Tom Cruise as their Christ figure. Okay, the article didn’t suggest it, they came right out and said it. According to the Sun, diminutive Scientology leader David Miscavige believes:
…that in future, Cruise, 44, will be worshipped like Jesus for his work to raise awareness of the religion.
A source close to the actor, who has risen to one of the church’s top levels, said: “Tom has been told he is Scientology’s Christ-like figure.
“Like Christ, he’s been criticised for his views. But future generations will realise he was right.”
The story was picked up by Drudge and rocketed around the world, making Scientology look like…well…just like the wacky UFO cult they are.
Although Scientology has denied the story, that didn’t stop Keith Olbermann from turning it into his number one story on the Countdown.
By the way, if you don’t watch Keith Olbermann every day on MSNBC, you are not an informed citizen. It’s the best damn news show on TV. That comes straight from an Emmy winning journalist, my friends.
Now, I knew this Christ story was fake from the second I read it. It made no sense at all. Why would David Miscavige, the tiny keeper of the tech, say that Cruise was a fictional character?
L. Ron Hubbard himself declared that there was no Christ, that some madmen stumbled upon part of Hubbard’s tech 2000 years ago, misinterpreted Hubbard’s material and came up with the whole “man on the cross” story.
That’s a pretty wild statement and I wouldn’t expect you to believe me when I tell it to you…which is why I’m happy to be able to have L. Ron Hubbard tell it to you in his own voice.

On Thursday and Friday, the state Capitol Rotunda will host an exhibit titled "The Industry of Death." If you’re thinking it’s about time an exposé about corporate chicken farming came to the Capitol, you’ll be sadly disappointed. However, if you believe that psychiatrists and the entire psychiatric profession are part of a secret plan for world domination developed in part by Adolf Hitler, then it’s time to load the kids in the car for a day of fun at the Capitol.
The "Industry of Death" exhibit is sponsored by the Church of Scientology and makes a host of outrageous claims about the field of psychiatry. Twenty-five percent of psychiatrists sexually abuse their patients. Psychiatrists deliberately kill about 10,000 people a year - sounds about right. And for the big surprise, psychiatrists were responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks - guilty by association, at least, since psychiatrists are responsible for the existence of terrorists and suicide bombers. Last year, Tom Cruise famously launched his own attack on psychiatry after learning some of these "facts" about the profession. This exhibit explains a lot about why he seemed so far out when discussing psychiatry with Matt Lauer on "Today."
The Church of Scientology has always seemed to have it in for psychiatrists. Perhaps it is because psychiatry and psychology are based on science, while Scientology is based on the ramblings of a science-fiction writer from the 1950s. A follower of Scientology pays to take classes to receive the wisdom of Scientology, which is not publicly available. The more classes you take, the more enlightened you get. On Thursday and Friday, the state Capitol Rotunda will host an exhibit titled "The Industry of Death." If you’re thinking it’s about time an exposé about corporate chicken farming came to the Capitol, you’ll be sadly disappointed. However, if you believe that psychiatrists and the entire psychiatric profession are part of a secret plan for world domination developed in part by Adolf Hitler, then it’s time to load the kids in the car for a day of fun at the Capitol.
The "Industry of Death" exhibit is sponsored by the Church of Scientology and makes a host of outrageous claims about the field of psychiatry. Twenty-five percent of psychiatrists sexually abuse their patients. Psychiatrists deliberately kill about 10,000 people a year - sounds about right. And for the big surprise, psychiatrists were responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks - guilty by association, at least, since psychiatrists are responsible for the existence of terrorists and suicide bombers. Last year, Tom Cruise famously launched his own attack on psychiatry after learning some of these "facts" about the profession. This exhibit explains a lot about why he seemed so far out when discussing psychiatry with Matt Lauer on "Today."
The Church of Scientology has always seemed to have it in for psychiatrists. Perhaps it is because psychiatry and psychology are based on science, while Scientology is based on the ramblings of a science-fiction writer from the 1950s. I don't think anyone has ever gotten a staff member to admit this statement to a non scientologist, much less a journalist albeit under cover:

I read a post here concerning recent con artist type of 'hard sell regging' and the overwhelming debt Scientologists are finding themselves into and I was surprised. It's not that I hard a hard time envisioning such a situation, but that these kinds of tactics were still going on!
How many years does it take before it's clearly evident to a Scientologist that there was never a concerted effort to correct this insanity? This practice has been going on since before and after Int Management came on the scene to supposedly correct the injustices and squirrelling of Hubbard's adminstrative policy.
How is it that members are pushed so hard into second guessing their better judgement & going into the very degree of debt one mever ever planned on getting into? And why hasn't this coersion situation not been corrected?
How is it that one has to fight or succumb everytime there is something to be sold by the church. There is no other equally sized organization in the world that practices this kind of intimidation. There is something so wrong with this whole picture.
Now, it's bad enough when members of Scientology are hard pressured to go into severe debt to 'help' clear the planet, but it doesn't stop at the people who give and then go back out to bust their butt, like a machine even, to try and keep up with the increased debt payments.
Whether you can actually afford the services the Church of Scientology registrars and Flag FSMs push is apparently of no concern to them and obviously something normal scientologists find difficult to take.
However, the fraud that Scientology perpetrated against Raul Lopez, a mentally incapacitated traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor was, clearly, just 'more of the same and then some'. Read this court document. This is just the tip of the iceburg on how far many registrars & FSMs will go when that old 'purpose is senior to policy' button is pushed.

I don't mean to be cold hearted, but every once in a while scientology's "hard sell" abuse is used without first putting you and others into a proper "winning" trance like state ...
I forget the exact LRH quote, but to paraphrase it, it went something like "keep the PC winning ..." LRH understood that to keep the con game going it was important to keep the PC (the mark) in a semi-perpetual state of confusion.
Once that is acomplished, you can then use various means of internal persuasion (ethics, justice, RPF, declares) and external persuasion (GO/OSA) to keep the whole operation from being exposed/discovered.
Since the begining LRH tried to put off discovery of the following truths:
- The tech does not work.
- People find out it does not work.
- People tell other people what they found out.
- People know it is a scam/fraud.
It is the reverse of the "simple story of scientology" ...
The thing to keep in mind is that over 99% of those who have tried scientology are no longer supporting scientology.
Over 10 Million have tried, but less than 100,000 scientologists remain as active happy clams.

I can understand the basic idea behind the scam, but what I don't get is how Co$ can convince the "PC" that he's "winning"??? What he hell IS a "win", anyway? What are they winning? (Other than a one way trip to the poor-house by way of a grotty little place called: The Crazy Ramblings of "Mo Ron" Hubbard.)
(I apologize, but I've never been a member of Co$, and never want to be, so I'm not completely familiar with all the terms as Co$ uses them.)

The whole experience is designed to put people into an "enlightened" temporary state of euphoria. It's a feel-good state and also one in which people are easily indoctrinated.

The "wins" generally boil down to being processed into a state of euphoria, feeling great for a day or two, then coming down and needing to start again. Then are also officially published wins. These are the 'tales of the OTs' which tend to be just kinda sad.
For most members, the regular win they get is "I feel good". This feeling is always ephemeral, and requires topping up with more processing.

A 'Win' is supposed to be a 'realization or recovered ability' (according to Scientology we all already have all abilities, which are being 'suppressed'; so, speaking swahili a'la glossolalia *already* exists, but is being suppressed. It could also be the ability to repair the transmission on a '37 Desoto. 'Learning" is a waste of time, because you already *have* all these abilities, but, they're being 'suppressed'.)
Every Scientology course or process requires a 'Win' and 'VGI' or, Very Good Indicators, meaning the chump says he's *happy* with the 'process/course/'treatment'.
If he *doesn't* have a win or 'VGI' the process must *continue* until he does. At his own cost.
It's a rare clam who's unwilling to admit to or manufacture a 'cog' or 'recovered ability' when faced with the prospect of Scientology ad infinitum. And, since the 'Tech' is always effective, *eventually* he'll find one.
Kind of like a dentist who charges $120/hr and guarantees 'success', then proceeds to drill holes willy-nilly until the 'patient' admits to feeling better.
The rare clam who actually *demands* a return on his investment and denies having had a 'cog' or a 'recovered ability' out of some misguided stubborness, and, despite the cash hemhorage will eventually be discovered to be a 'No Case Gain' suppressive and tossed out. Since, after all, the 'Tech' always works, so, it must have been his fault.
Naturally, there's a lot of pressure to come up with a 'Win', so, everybody does, although, many ex-Scientologists are willing to admit to 'faking wins' just to make the pressure stop and stop the running 'meter'.
And, human nature being what it is; most people who 'fake wins' actually and eventually come to believe their own faked wins. It's easier than admitting that you faked it. And, naturally, the 'Church' pounces on those willing to admit to having 'faked wins' with a glorious Hubbardian 'Aha!' Because, that's why Scientology didn't 'work' for them. Scientology *always* works :)

Now, it's bad enough when members of Scientology are hard pressured to go into severe debt to 'help' clear the planet, but it doesn't stop at the people who give and then go back out to bust their butt, like a machine even, to try and keep up with the increased debt payments.
Whether you can actually afford the services the Church of Scientology registrars and Flag FSMs push is apparently of no concern to them and obviously something normal scientologists find difficult to take.

I don't mean to be cold hearted, but every once in a while scientology's "hard sell" abuse is used without first putting you and others into a proper "winning" trance like state ...
I forget the exact LRH quote, but to paraphrase it, it went something like "keep the PC winning ..." LRH understood that to keep the con game going it was important to keep the PC (the mark) in a semi-perpetual state of confusion.
Once that is acomplished, you can then use various means of internal persuasion (ethics, justice, RPF, declares) and external persuasion (GO/OSA) to keep the whole operation from being exposed/discovered.
Since the begining LRH tried to put off discovery of the following truths:
- The tech does not work.
- People find out it does not work.
- People tell other people what they found out.
- People know it is a scam/fraud.
It is the reverse of the "simple story of scientology" ...
The thing to keep in mind is that over 99% of those who have tried scientology are no longer supporting scientology.
Over 10 Million have tried, but less than 100,000 scientologists remain as active happy clams.

I can understand the basic idea behind the scam, but what I don't get is how Co$ can convince the "PC" that he's "winning"??? What he hell IS a "win", anyway? What are they winning? (Other than a one way trip to the poor-house by way of a grotty little place called: The Crazy Ramblings of "Mo Ron" Hubbard.)
(I apologize, but I've never been a member of Co$, and never want to be, so I'm not completely familiar with all the terms as Co$ uses them.)

The "wins" generally boil down to being processed into a state of euphoria, feeling great for a day or two, then coming down and needing to start again. Then are also officially published wins. These are the 'tales of the OTs' which tend to be just kinda sad.
For most members, the regular win they get is "I feel good". This feeling is always ephemeral, and requires topping up with more processing.

A 'Win' is supposed to be a 'realization or recovered ability' (according to Scientology we all already have all abilities, which are being 'suppressed'; so, speaking swahili a'la glossolalia *already* exists, but is being suppressed. It could also be the ability to repair the transmission on a '37 Desoto. 'Learning" is a waste of time, because you already *have* all these abilities, but, they're being 'suppressed'.)
Every Scientology course or process requires a 'Win' and 'VGI' or, Very Good Indicators, meaning the chump says he's *happy* with the 'process/course/'treatment'.
If he *doesn't* have a win or 'VGI' the process must *continue* until he does. At his own cost.
It's a rare clam who's unwilling to admit to or manufacture a 'cog' or 'recovered ability' when faced with the prospect of Scientology ad infinitum. And, since the 'Tech' is always effective, *eventually* he'll find one.
Kind of like a dentist who charges $120/hr and guarantees 'success', then proceeds to drill holes willy-nilly until the 'patient' admits to feeling better.
The rare clam who actually *demands* a return on his investment and denies having had a 'cog' or a 'recovered ability' out of some misguided stubborness, and, despite the cash hemhorage will eventually be discovered to be a 'No Case Gain' suppressive and tossed out. Since, after all, the 'Tech' always works, so, it must have been his fault.
Naturally, there's a lot of pressure to come up with a 'Win', so, everybody does, although, many ex-Scientologists are willing to admit to 'faking wins' just to make the pressure stop and stop the running 'meter'.
And, human nature being what it is; most people who 'fake wins' actually and eventually come to believe their own faked wins. It's easier than admitting that you faked it. And, naturally, the 'Church' pounces on those willing to admit to having 'faked wins' with a glorious Hubbardian 'Aha!' Because, that's why Scientology didn't 'work' for them. Scientology *always* works :)

Groups affiliated with the Church of Scientology have agreed to pay back $3.5 million they received from former Santa Barbara money manager Reed Slatkin and others who invested with him.
The settlement, approved Tuesday by a federal bankruptcy judge, is part of final efforts to recover funds for the victims of Slatkin, who is serving a 14-year sentence for fraud, conspiracy and money laundering. Authorities say Slatkin led a long-running Ponzi scheme in which money from some investors was used to pay off others.
The fraud raised about $593 million in all, with investor losses estimated at about $240 million.
Slatkin, whose clients included actor Peter Coyote and television legal commentator Greta Van Susteren, paid $1.7 million in ill-gotten gains directly to Scientology organizations, bankruptcy trustee R. Todd Neilson said in court filings.
Millions of dollars more in tainted funds were funneled through other investors to Scientology-affiliated groups, including Narconon International, the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International and the Church of Scientology Western United States, the filings said.
The exact amount funneled through the investors was never determined, said Alexander Pilmer, an attorney for Neilson. Pilmer and Scientology attorney David Schindler said the $3.5-million settlement was a negotiated compromise.
Schindler said that the church had always wanted to return any fraudulently obtained funds and that the only dispute was over what amount was fair.
"The church and its hundreds of parishioners were as much victims of Slatkin as anyone else," he said.
Slatkin, who was once an ordained Scientology minister, had maintained that his actions were motivated in part by threats from other church members. In sentencing him to 14 years in federal prison, however, U.S. District Judge Margaret Morrow rejected his claim that he had acted under "duress and diminished capacity" because fellow Scientologists pressured him to continue paying them profits.
Slatkin gave some of the $593 million he collected back to investors as "profits," which is why prosecutors place investor losses at about $240 million.
By liquidating assets and suing investors who profited by receiving tainted money, Pilmer said, the bankruptcy trustee will have repaid victims 41 cents to 42 cents on the dollar ? about $100 million in all ? by the end of this year.
In addition, the bankruptcy trustee is still seeking to recover $12.1 million from a dozen defendants who came out ahead on the scam. The settlement with the Scientology groups removed a major impediment to closing the case, Pilmer said.
"We are close to the final wrap-up phase," he said.
Slatkin, who lived on a four-acre estate and spent lavishly on art, cars and airplanes, is serving his prison sentence in Taft, Calif., after pleading guilty in 2002 to fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.
Slatkin started soliciting money from fellow Scientologists in the mid-1980s. His reputation grew because of his role as a financer of Internet service provider EarthLink Inc. in 1994, when he provided $75,000 to EarthLink founder Sky Dayton.
Before long, he was taking in large sums from Internet executives, Hollywood players and socialites from across the country.
In the end, Slatkin admitted that his investment empire had been a sham since its inception in 1986, a scam he kept going for 15 years by distributing the "profits" to some investors that were really just funds from other investors ? a classic example of a Ponzi scheme.
Attorneys for the bankruptcy trustee sued or threatened to sue about 400 individuals and groups that emerged as "winners," having received more money from Slatkin than they invested.
With Tuesday's endorsement of the Scientology settlement by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robin Riblet in Santa Barbara, about $78 million has been recovered in those so-called adversary proceedings, Pilmer said.
A separate lawsuit accusing Slatkin's former bankers of lending an air of legitimacy to his enterprise was settled two years ago. Without admitting wrongdoing, the defendants, including Union Bank of California, agreed to pay $26.5 million. Most of that settlement ? $15.5 million ? was paid to a group of the largest investors and their lawyers at Pilmer's firm, Kirkland & Ellis.

But court records unsealed by 48 Hours indicate that Jeremy’s treatment was limited to mostly vitamins and other holistic healing methods. The family filled prescriptions for an anti-anxiety drug and a sleeping aid. Medical experts and a doctor who treated Jeremy after the murder dismiss these methods as ineffective for an individual with paranoid schizophrenia.
Today the Church of Scientology claims more than 10 million members worldwide. Its religious opposition to psychiatry is well-known. In June of 2005, the issue was brought to national attention when actor Tom Cruise took a very public stance on NBC’s "Today" show. "I know that psychiatry is a pseudo-science," he told Matt Lauer. "You don’t know the history of psychiatry. I do." Van Sant examines the roots of Scientology’s opposition to psychiatry and the tragic death of a caring mother who desperately wanted to help her beloved son. '
